The End of Cheap FireWire

By Simon Strantzas (procurement@loop.ca), Product Specialist

Need Firewire on your new MacBook? Now is your last chance!

Apple has quietly updated the White MacBook 13-inch, the sole remaining MacBook to sport the previous design. Yes, you still get the white polycarbonate shell instead of the aluminum, and you have an independent trackpad button, but for most users the FireWire 400 port is why they would rather stick with the older style model.

This new update, no doubt the last it will receive before the design is permanently retired, brings the speed of the Intel Core 2 Duo processor to 2.13GHz, and the RAM up to 2GB. The hard drive is also larger at 160GB, the whole system bus has been increased, allowing for a much faster machine. Still powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics card, the machine will run displays up to 24" (though not the Apple 24" LED display, alas).

Why Apple removed the FireWire from the MacBook line is anybody's guess. Perhaps USB 2.0 has truly taken over the consumer-level market, and the FireWire interface was unnecessary for most users. For now, though, those who disagree still have an option of this inexpensive portable. Once it's gone, the only option left for those who require the FireWire interface is migrating to the MacBook Pro line. Of course, there a plenty of advantages to moving that direction anyway, so perhaps it makes more sense to move that way now. Hm. As you can tell, I'm conflicted.

Please don't hesitate to give us a call at Loop to discuss your many options, and for help determine which model will work best for you.
